1. Before you come down to our store; to browse our beds and mattresses try to wear lighter clothing, trying a bed in a big outdoor coat will add to the padding around you and give a false impression of how the bed will feel.
2. It’s easy for us to say, but try not to buy because of price. You will probably sleep on your new bed somewhere between 5 & 10 years depending on quality. As a result it is essential that you try your new purchase in store. Come and have a lie down, get comfortable and really get an idea of how it is likely to feel after a night’s sleep.
3. Don’t just buy a bed because it says it’s good for your back. Everybody is different and as such will have different requirements for comfort and support.
4. If you don’t know whether you prefer a softer or firmer feel, tell us, we can let you try a couple of options to help you decide, you are the only person who knows how comfortable a particular bed and mattress is to you.
5. The term ‘orthopaedic’ generally means an extra firm bed; it is not based on any medical or other common standard. Firmness is not determined by price, although comfort, luxury and durability and added features come with higher price tags.
6. Do not confuse a hard bed with a supportive bed, and don’t assume that an orthopaedic or firmer bed is the best option. Support and comfort are very important-if you sit on a hard chair for an hour, you’d start fidgeting, a bed is no different, you will have restless and disturbed sleep.
7. When you come to our store, tell our bed advisor about the bed you have now, What sort of base does it have? Is it a bed frame and mattress? Are you/was it comfortable when new? Do you wake up with aches and pains?
8. Try to narrow your choice down to two or three beds or mattresses and then spend plenty of time lying on them. Five or 10 minutes should be the minimum for each bed – but feel free to spend half an hour or even an hour, if that’s what you want to do.
9. Try and adopt your normal sleeping position when you are trying your new potential bed/mattress it may seem embarrassing at the time, but investing the time in making sure you get the right bed is worth it!
10. If your bed is for two, a bigger bed will be of benefit for both partners – with less partner disturbance. Zip and link beds are a good option if firmness preferences differ widely or where a future requirement for two separate beds is identified.
11. Think also about the height of the bed and the size of it in your room, Getting in and out and walking round the room are important considerations. It also important to check your access, attics and spiral staircases can be impossible with certain items.
12. Many mattresses need to be turned regularly this ensures even wear and tear and prolongs the life of the mattress. Remember good quality mattresses are heavy! You might want to look at a mattress which does not need regular turning – there are a number of non-turn options of all types of mattress construction
